Outdated Chairs Get a Pop of Colour

IMG_3462

I picked up these chairs at a yard sale for $5.00 each. It was probably the most exciting furniture purchase I ever made till yet, not only because it was cheap, but because I looked past the horrible mustard velvet fabric and immediately knew what style I wanted to create. Deep purples, reds and black were already bouncing in my mind before I even made the purchase.

Since I knew I wanted the wood to be a bold colour, I opted for a neutral coloured fabric. I chose a vintage newspaper print fabric from Designer Fabrics, not only because I liked the 20th century English derby/circus personality of the print, but mainly because the black and grey tones of the fabric gave me a lot of flexibility to go bold with the paint. A bright colour framing a neutral fabric would harmonize the contrast.

The thing that caught my attention the most about these chairs was how beautifully the wood was crafted. The curved details and the pointy legs reminded me a little of of the Baroque style of furniture which is why I think I was inspired to step out of my comfort zone and go a little dark.
