Blue and Purple Mascara

When it comes to makeup, I have a tendency of keeping the eyes very simple. I usually grab my Kat Von D brown eyeliner and Lash Paradise mascara and call it a day.

Sometimes I don’t even bother with eyeliner and I just do mascara. This would surprise people who know how much I love makeup. As much as I love eyeshadow and eye makeup products can creatively accentuate the eyes, when it comes to makeup on the daily,  I have to admit I’m pretty lazy and often keep the eye makeup creations for special occasions.

That philosophy easily changed when my friend wore a striking indigo blue mascara one day. The blue framing her dark eyes on her caramel skin looked stunning and captivating.

I told myself maybe it’s time I add some colour to my daily makeup routine by still keeping it as low-key as possible. I may not have time to blend six different eyeshadows every morning, but if I can achieve a playful kiss of colour with a few swipes of mascara, then sign me up.

My friend used the Benefit They’re Real mascara in the colour Beyond Blue. As much as I adore Benefit’s mascaras, I didn’t want to spend too much money as a starter in colour mascaras, so I went for the more budget-friendly L’Oréal Voluminous Original Mascara in Cobalt Blue. I’ve always been a fan of the L’Oréal Voluminous line, so I figured I can’t go wrong with their blue edition.

I couldn’t get over how vibrant this blue was. I mean just look at how rich and luxurious this looks. It reminds me of the sea of blue rooftops in Mykonos. At first I was a little nervous it might be a little too vibrant, but hey, sometimes you gotta step out of your comfort zone.

Just one swipe was enough for the blue to latch on. This mascara applies beautifully, just like the original one. It doesn’t clump and it lifts your lashes, framing your eyes in a blue hue. I put two coats and I was able to achieve this look. I’ve gotten so many compliments whenever I wear this.

I was so pleased with the results and feedback I was getting from this blue mascara that I wanted to experiment with more colours. I opted for purple as I figured it would compliment my hazel eyes. I went to NYX and picked up their Color Mascara in Purple.

This mascara didn’t wow me as much as the Cobalt Blue, probably because purple tends to blend in with brunettes/redheads (i.e. I feel like purple mascara would pop more on blondes with blue or green eyes).

In all honesty, the mascara on its own didn’t perform as good as the L’Oréal did. It barely lifted my lashes and I didn’t see any colour at all when I wore it on its own. The trick: apply on black mascara and the colour will appear. So I did one coat of my black Lash Paradise (it’s the perfect base because it lifts my lashes nicely) and as a second coat, I applied the purple. That’s when the colour showed.  The colour is subtle, but it’s there, and it definitely shows better in natural daylight or flash photography. I liked the subtle violet that framed my eyes, especially on the lower lash line, and I liked that this mascara didn’t clump.

Between these two, I’d say the L’Oréal Cobalt Blue is the one I gravitate to the most when I want to add colour to my daily makeup. I love the vibrancy of that blue, it makes me feel playful and fun, and it really does a good job at curling my long (yet pin straight) lashes.

I’m glad I picked these up, and I’m glad I decided to dip my toe in the world of vibrant yet easy eye makeup routines that doesn’t take too much of my sleepy bum’s time in the mornings. If you end up doing the same, enjoy it!
