This summer, I’ve plunged into the passion of cycling. I owe my biking interest to Amsterdam after visiting this charming city in 2011. While on my brief but very enjoyable stay there, I was flabbergasted by its dominant abundance of bicycles. Millions of bikes were parked everywhere, millions of cyclists in suits, heels, dresses and babies strapped to the back were zooming past me in their fiets (that’s Dutch for bicycle) making me, a lone pedestrian, feel like a minority walking on foot in a land of cycle-mania.
Fast forward a couple of years later and Amsterdam’s bike culture revived in me again after working in the downtown hub of a cyclist neighbourhood. Seeing young professionals bike their way to work or to play, made me want to get a bike. So I went and got myself a bike. Cycling is not only a great way to get my bum back into shape, it has become a type of therapeutic adventure for me. Cycling into the great outdoors ignites this feeling of freedom, this feeling of flying, this feeling of being in control of my own navigation, and this feeling of calmness that I’ve never really experienced before through a sport. Most of all, riding through earthy sceneries is what exhilarates me the most about it. Here’s a peek of my bike route views, with more to come š
